TRIPLE O CHALLENGE: FIRE SERVICE BURNS OPPOSITION

THE FIRST DAY of the 2008 Surfest saw the Triple O Challengetaken out by the NSW Fire Service for the third consecutive year.

It was a convincing performance by the Fire Service as they also dominated the U/40 and O/40 short board and long board divisions in clean 1 metre waves at Merewether Beach.

The unique Teams Event and Relay sees three surfers from each service catch two waves in a total heat time of just 30 minutes.

They have to also do beach sprints and tag the next competitor in a competition where fitness counts for plenty.

And that's where the fireys have the edge.

"There's been three contests and we've wrapped them all up," said Senior Firefighter Terry Caban from Cooks Hill Fire Station.

But while the services take their sport seriously, the day also provides the opportunity for a social get together away from the pressured environments where the blokes and women from these services most often cross paths.

Ambulance officer Steve Brinkley from Maitland joked that the fire service get the advantage on the police force and ambulance service because "they get more time to practice."

"We'd love to pry the trophy out of their grasp, but they are really good surfers - maybe we can introduce a handicap system in 2009," Mr Brinkley said.

In the Employment Plus Indigenous Classic, Central Coast surfer Russell Maloney has edged Kobi Nau from Wollongong out of the open division prize by less than two points.

It's the third year in a row the 30-year-old has grasped the trophy and automatically won a place in next week's 4-star WQS Mark Richards Pro.

In the junior division of the Indigenous Classic, brothers-in-arms Beau and Sean Wills from Umina took first and third place respectively, while the Kenny boys - Tom and Nick from Copacabana - wrapped up second and fourth spots.
