ADAM IS LAST LOCAL STANDING AT MARK RICHARDS PRO

MEREWETHER's Jesse Adam is the only local surfer still in contention after the round of 96 was completed at the 4-star World Qualifying Series (WQS) Mark Richards Pro at Merewether this afternoon.

Adam, who is backing up from surfing in last weekend's Motorola Pro Junior, racked up a score of 12.5 to keep him in the running for the $US80,000 prize packet and valuable early season points in the WQS.

Local knowledge saw Adam avoid the paddle out from the beach. Instead he jumped off the rock shelf, paddled across to the break and almost immediately took command of the heat by racking up a 7.83.

"I got a couple of great ones right off the bat so I could just sit out the back and watch the other guys," Adam laughed.

"It was really fun. It was sunny with good 2 foot waves.

"You can't ask for much more except for maybe more swell," said Adams, who last month captured his maiden ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series victory at Coffs Harbour.

The 19-year-old will tomorrow come up against fellow Aussie Adam Melling as well as Chris Ward (USA) and Hugo Savalli (REU) in the round of 64.

The other remaining locals who were bundled out of the competition today included Drew McPherson (Nords Wharf) and Craig Anderson (Newcastle).

McPherson held onto second place in his heat until the dying minutes when American Darrell Goodrum scored an 8.0 off his last wave and leapt to the top of the heat's tally sheet.

In doing so, he made way for Kiwi Darrell Goodrum to sneak into second while edging McPherson from the race.

Anderson, who was competing in the same heat, only secured a total point score of 10.33.

"It happens, and at this level it happens a lot," said McPherson, who had won last year's Pro Junior at this very beach.

"It would have been nice to make the next few heats and it would have been perfect to have gone through but it was just a bit of bad luck," he said philosophically.

Aussies to progress in the later heats of the afternoon include Queenscliff's Nick Riley, Maroubra's Blake Thornton, Sunshine Coast duo Blake Wilson and Ryan Campbell, Copacabana's Matt Wilkinson and Manly's Sam Page.

Aussies eliminated include Heath Joske from Nambucca Heads, Curl Curl's Matt Bemrose, Lake Munmorah's Michael Spencer and James Athorn from Mullaway.

The Mark Richards Pro round of 64 will commence Friday just before 11am, with the Midori Pro round of 24 starting the day's action at 7.30am to be immediately followed by the women's round of 12.
